The Dance of the Crow
Convention: KumoriCon 2011
Performed by: Ninja of the Night Character Portrayed: Mytho Premise: The strange and controlling relationship between Rue and Mytho, and how Mytho's personality changes. About the Experience: Well, this was another one of those instances where we decided to enter a competition less than 2 weeks before the convention. We DID learn from Sounds of Silent Hill though, and there were no full-head masks involved this time. We spent maybe a total of 10 hours on choreography and rehearsal. Although we had to scale down immensely for a smaller venue, it was still fun, and a bit of a throwback to the style of things I did for WCS. We were worried something Dramatic woudln't be well received at this convention, but in the end, it seems we were wrong! Award(s): Best Masters Skit |

Convention: FanimeCon 2011
Performed by: Ninja of the Night Character Portrayed: None (Ninja) Premise: An artistic interpretations of the wildly popular video game: "Portal" About the Experience: This was our first time performing at Fanime, and our first as a GROUP performing something that wasn't comedy. It was outside our comfort zone in every aspect, but in the end, was so completely worth it. This video went VIRAL in the gaming community in the week following Fanime, reaching over 800,000 views as of the time of this posting. It was also featured on G4's "Attack of the Show", as well as various gaming blogs including GamesRadar, TheEscapist, Kotaku.com, and MSNBC! Being a part of this was nothing short of MIND-BLOWING, even with the minor malfunctions that occurred on-stage. Award(s): Best Dramatic Skit |
Flags of Our Fathers
Convention: SakuraCon 2011
Performed by: Ninja of the Night Character Portrayed: Japan Premise: A gathering of Nations, in the form of a coordinated, patriotic display, is crashed by an uninvited guest. About the Experience: We had already planned for this year to be our last performing at SakuraCon, so we wanted to go out with something flashy. Although I'm not a huge fan of Hetalia, when Kayla suggested that this series was a perfect excuse to do a flag dance, I got on board with it. Casting was tricky, and it took a couple of months to gets enough individuals to fill the whole cast. In the end, I'm very proud of what we produced. It's not our usual gut-busting parody-style, but I think it's good for us to start expanding out of our comfort zone. Award(s): None. |
Sounds of Silent Hill
Convention: AkiCon 2010
Performed by: N-O-T-N Character Portrayed: Nurse Premise: Silent Hill monsters dance to a 'unique' piece of music -- made entirely out of sound effects from the game series. About the Experience: Two weeks prior to AkiCon, Kayla, Mandy and I decided that it'd be a good idea to enter their cosplay contest. Things we learned from this skit: 1. Never plan a skit 2 weeks out. 2. Never plan a skit involving dancing in Silent Hill Nurse full-head masks. (breathing, hearing, and seeing is something you take for granted) 3. Never plan a skit 2 weeks out that involves dancing in Silent Hill Nurse full-head masks. Award(s): 1st Place AkiCon Cosplay Showdown |
Princess Tutu
Convention: World Cosplay Summit 2010
Performed by: Krystal and Rynn Character Portrayed: Mytho (Voice of Rue) Premise: ** SPOILERS! ** Rue and Mytho's relationship from the late part of Princess Tutu, as told in the style of a psuedo-Beauty-and-the-Beast story. The last three episodes of the series were a huge inspiration for this performance. About the Experience: Getting to be a part of the World Cosplay Summit was so amazing, it's truly beyond words. We had six weeks to pull together the costumes, music, and this performance. Without the help of our friends, it wouldn't have happened. It was hard to feel like we belonged up there with some of the other teams, but in the end, we're proud of what we put together, and hope that everyone else enjoyed it as well. The music was edited down from the track "Oceanic" by Bond, which was selected for it's arrangement of "Aquarium" from Carnival of the Animals -- a piece that is used frequently in the anime, in scenes involving Rue and Mytho. Fushigi Yuugi
Convention: FanimeCon 2010
Performed by: Krystal and Rynn Character Portrayed: Yui Hongo Premise: The relationship between Miaka and Yui, as told with no words, interpretive dancing, flags, and a 3-minute time limit. About the Experience: Rynn and I had been talking about going out for WCS for over a year. When we had planned to make these costumes, the whole point was to enter in the Preliminaries for WCS. Then, at the last minute, it was going to be hosted at Fanime, so we thought "why not?" -- We spent at least 5 hours every night at the con, choreographing and rehearsing, and cursing our stupid sleeves. Running on two hours of sleep prior to our performance, we were shocked and delighted that all of our work paid off! Award(s): First Place - World Cosplay Summit Team USA 2010 |
How 2BA Pokemon Master
Convention: SakuraCon 2010
Performed by: Ninja of the Night Character Portrayed: Misty Premise: Ash and Co. walk you through all the essential steps to becoming a Pokemon Master, in the style of a 1950's educational film. Sarcasm and Snark Abounds! About the Experience: This was one of those years were we went through about four different fully-formed ideas for a skit, before we came to this idea. We'd been talking about Pokemon costumes for a while, and when we thought up the idea of a cheesy educational video, Pokemon seemed to fit the bill. This was NOTN's first single-canon skit, and our largest cast to date! Making Misty was worth it, just for this performance. Award(s): Best in Show |
Sora the Explorer
Convention: SakuraCon 2009
Performed by: Ninja of the Night Character Portrayed: Kairi Premise: A crazy crossover parody of the children's TV show "Dora the Explorer" -- Sora has to find his kidnapped friend Kairi, and he needs YOUR HELP! About the Experience: I will admit I was pulled into this skit fairly last minute, but boy am I glad I was. The premise was so incredibly hilarious, and I was happy to be able to contribute to some of the blocking. The "Audience Interaction" element of this skit was so fun, it still makes me laugh. Award(s): Best in Show |
A Recipe for Turnabout
Convention: KumoriCon 2008
Performed by: Jellybean Steamtanks Character Portrayed: Misa Amane (though I'm cropped out of the frame for most of the skit >.>) Premise: Misa Amane is placed on trial for the murder of beloved food celebrity Cooking Mama. But when you throw in Shinigami and dead witnesses with a fan-fiction distracted Judge, the results are bound to be... interesting. About the Experience: This was my first time heading up a skit-production, and my first opportunity to work at audio mixing. We wound up having to do a LOT of last-minute rehersing to drill it into everyone's heads, but we still pulled it out, and got laughs in all the right places. Good times were had by all! Award(s): Best Masters Skit |
The Game of Life
Convention: Anime Central 2008
Performed by: Jellybean Steamtanks Character Portrayed: Light Yagami Premise: Light Yagami finds himself in a dark room, chained to a chair, and presented with the choice of doing as he's told by an ominous voice, or losing his freedom (and possibly his life!). About the Experience: Rynn actually came up with the idea of using the "Saw" films in a skit while churning through ideas for NOTN's Sakuracon 2008 skit. It was rejected, but in about 2 hours, we turned it around into a clever little Death Note skit. It was done purely for laughs, and the response we got was absolutely MIND-BLOWING. We chose not to have our Value-Village cosplays judged, and got the surprise of our life when we were given the top skit award for the Masq! :D Definitely my FAVORITE cosplay experience to date. Award(s): Best Skit / Best in Show |
Between Life and Deathnote
Convention: SakuraCon 2008
Performed by: Ninja of the Night Character Portrayed: Orihime Inoue, providing the voice of The Great Will of the Universe Premise: Three Strangers find themselves mysteriously dead at the hands of famous murderer "Kira". They are given a second chance at life by the Great Will of the Universe, if they can stop Kira... in less than four minutes. About the Experience: Second skit I'd ever been involved with, once again with the ladies of NOTN. This was a new experience because I had to lip-sync to someone ELSE'S voice recording, while also having provided the voice for a different character. @_@ Great experience, with a great response. Award(s): None |
Super Elric Bros.
Convention: SakuraCon 2007
Performed by: Ninja of the Night Character Portrayed: Winry Rockbell Premise: When Itachi Uchiha kidnaps Winry in an attempt to 'help repopulate his clan", Edward has to rescue his Lady Fair Damsel-in-Distress childhood friend and potential love interest. He's sent on a wild-goose-chase through various shojou-themed worlds, via a mysterious giant green pipe. O.o About the Experience: This was the first time I'd ever been involved in a cosplay skit, and I had a blast! We got such an amazing response, the whole experience was probably one of the best in my cosplay 'career'! Award(s): Best Veteran (Journeyman) Skit |
