Howl's Moving Castle

Sophie Hatter

Howl's Moving Castle is one of my favorite books, and I did really enjoy the movie too -- Sophie is a character I relate to very strongly.  Looking for something simple and comfortable to make and wear.  Even though this outfit of Sophie's is on screen for less than 30 seconds, I had already made her green dress back in 2008 and I thought this was way cuter and more fun than her blue dress.

I purchased the straw hat on Amazon, and after 3 hats showing up being more creamy-ivory than TRUE WHITE, I painted it.  The hat band and bow were made of a leftover navy rose-print jaquard from when I made bias tape for Utena.   The wig was an inexpensive Amazon purchase that realistically, I should replace.  The dress is a combination of about 3 different patterns and my own ingenuity, and is made of a pale yellow poly-blend broadcloth with a diamond-pattern net lace overlay for extra texture.  The boots are white knee-high boots I had originally purchased for Alice from Pandora Hearts.  The broach is just a piece of model magic sculpted, painted red, and then painted in gloss.  All in all, a pretty simple project that I tried to take a little bit over the top.
